Polymer Screeds refer to high-performance, thin-layer flooring systems made from polymer-modified cementitious or resin-based materials. They are used to create smooth, durable, and level surfaces over concrete substrates before applying final floor finishes (such as coatings, tiles, or polished concrete) or as a standalone wear-resistant surface.

Key Features of Polymer Screeds:

  1. Polymer Modification

    • Contains polymers (e.g., acrylic, epoxy, or polyurethane) to enhance flexibility, adhesion, and durability.

    • Reduces cracking compared to traditional sand-cement screeds.

  2. Rapid Curing & Early Strength

    • Some formulations (e.g., fast-setting polymer-modified screeds) allow foot traffic within hours and full flooring installation within days.

  3. Thin Application

    • Can be applied as thinly as 3–10mm, making them ideal for refurbishment projects where floor height is critical.

  4. High Bond Strength

    • Excellent adhesion to concrete substrates, reducing delamination risks.

  5. Durability & Resistance

    • Resists abrasion, chemicals, and impact—suitable for warehouses, factories, and food processing plants.

  6. Self-levelling Properties

    • Many polymer screeds are self-smoothing, ensuring a flat surface without manual trowelling.

Common Types in the UK:

  • Polymer-Modified Cementitious Screeds (e.g., Ardex A 35, F. Ball Stopgap 1200) – Combine cement with polymers for better performance.

  • Epoxy or Polyurethane Resin Screeds – Used where extreme chemical resistance is needed.

  • Anhydrite (Calcium Sulfate) Screeds with Polymer Additives – Faster drying but require moisture testing.

Applications in Industrial Floors:

  • Preparation for Epoxy/PU Coatings – Provides a smooth base.

  • Repairing Damaged Floors – Fills cracks and voids.

  • Overfloor Systems – Used with underfloor heating or to improve thermal performance.

  • Food & Pharma Facilities – Hygienic, seamless, and easy to clean.

Advantages Over Traditional Screeds:

✔ Faster installation & drying times
✔ Reduced shrinkage & cracking
✔ Higher tensile strength
✔ Suitable for a wide range of subfloors (including old concrete and moisture-prone areas)

Polymer screeds are widely specified in the UK for industrial and commercial projects due to their reliability and performance under heavy loads.
